The introduction of private ownership of universities in the Nigeria university system has been described as an attempt by concerned Nigerians to help the Government in solving the prevailing problem in the country’s education system as it was apparent that government alone cannot give the desired quality of education.

Aare Afe Babalola made the revelation while giving the keynote address at the Retreat organized by Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.

The legal luminary stated that the quality education offered by universities like Stanford and Harvard would not be matched by Nigeria if the provision of education was left for the government alone, saying that paucity of funds by the government has affected the standard of education in the country.

While describing standard education as a very expensive enterprise, Aare Afe revealed that budget allocated to education was far below the recommendation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO).

He added his voice to the call on the Federal government to consider private universities in the disbursement of Education Trust Fund, arguing that many private universities were registered as non-profit making ventures.

The philanthropist commended the Founder of Elizade University, Chief Michael Ade.Ojo for joining hands with him and others to give quality education to the young generation. He also lauded the University for its “Wonderful” Structures and neatness.

Aare Afe Babalola enjoined members of staff of the University to make the most use of the opportunity of the retreat to improve their productivity and professionalism.

Speaking earlier, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Theophilus Fadayomi said that the idea of the staff retreat was in fulfillment of Management’s promise of on-the job training for the staff. He assured them of regular retreats, seminars and conferences that would improve them and increase their productivity.

He thanked Aare Afe babalola for creating time out of his busy schedules to honour the invitation of the University.
