The former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adebisi M. Balogun has urged Nigerian universities to go beyond the Basic Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in achieving their vision and mission.

Prof. Balogun stated this while speaking at the Retreat organized by the Management of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State for members of staff of the University. He lamented that many universities in Nigeria have failed to grow because they only strive to meet the minimum requirements of the Commission.

While noting that the BMAS was to guide universities, the Don, who was a visiting professor to the Commission, maintained that NUC would welcome ideas that could improve the quality of university education in the country.

He commended Elizade University for its unique approach to university education, which he said has entered the University’s name in the good books of the Commission.

Prof. Balogun also lauded the founder of the University for investing his hard-earned resources into the education sector.

He enjoined members of staff of the institution to strive to acquire modern knowledge and skills that would make them relevant in the 21st century university education.
