ELIZADE UNIVERSITY WINS BRITISH PARLIAMENT DEBATE TOURNAMENT

Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State has emerged the overall winner of the British Parliament Debate Tournament, tagged “South West Banter”, hosted by Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, and held between June 11 and 15, 2019. The Tournament, which drew participants from the University of Ilorin, University of Lagos, University of Calabar, Michael Okpara University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Ghana, Legon and the host University, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, had 96 speakers in all. At the end of the Tournament, Salim Ibrahim and Lilian Ejila from Elizade University won the grand finale in the main category, while in the novice category, the pair of Damilola Agbaje and Timothy Aghasan, both 100 level students came first. Another 100 level student of the University, Jennifer Koko-Bokeh won an individual medal as the best novice adjudicator. Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olukayode Amund expressed optimism that Elizade University Debaters have a strong potential for winning the National and Pan African University Debate Championships in the near future, and that in the long term even the World University Debate Championship is within reach, considering the caliber of the 16-year old debaters in their first year in the University. The duo of the President and Public Relations Officer of Elizade University Debating Society, Lilian Ejila and Salim Ibrahim respectively, said the victory at the Tournament was a dream come through, adding that the University Management had consistently supported the club since inception. “The University has demonstrated that when you trust people with resources and allow them to explore, you get the best results from them”, Lilian Ejila submitted. The trophy and other medals won at the Tournament will be presented to the Vice-Chancellor at a formal reception that would be organized in honour of the University Ambassadors.
