Physics with Electronics

Physics is the study of matter, energy, and the relationship between them. It is a natural science based on experiments, measurements, and mathematical analysis with the purpose of finding qualitative physical laws from the nano-particle to the macro world. Physics is at the heart of technology playing a key role in advancing the progress of humankind. In medicine, for instance, the use of x-rays, radioisotopes, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are all products of advances made in Physics. Also, we could not have developed computers without electronics which rely on the knowledge of quantum mechanics. Several aspects of human endeavours such as communication, economics, security, environmental safety, etc. have benefited immensely from the knowledge of physics The Department of Physical and Chemical Sciences offers a four-year programme leading to the award of a bachelor of science honours (B.Sc) degree in Physics with Electronics. The programme is designed to train prospective students in various aspects of Physics with Electronics such as mathematical physics, atmospheric physics, condensed matter, nuclear physics, digital electronics, telecommunication and others in an enabling ambient environment, powered by committed professionals, modern learning systems and excellent teaching &laboratory facilities. Studying Physics with Electronics at our Department promises to be an exciting experience, with brighter prospects for our graduates to find job placements in the industry (i.e. electronics, telecommunication, engineering, and manufacturing), higher institutions (i.e. universities, research institutes), government agencies, etc or as entrepreneurs.


Objectives
The main objectives of the program are to: (i) provide a broad and balanced foundation in the main branches of Physics to the students; (ii) provide students with opportunity for integrating theoretical Physics with practical in all branches of Physics; (iii) instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for Physics, and appreciation of its applications to electronics; (iv) Equip the students with necessary background for research and development in areas of theoretical and applied Physics; (v) involve the students in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying; (vi) prepare students that will attract high international employment profile in the field of Electronics Physics; and (vii) prepare students for self-reliant work after graduation.


Philosophy
The philosophy of the B.Sc. degree program in Physics with Electronics is to produce graduates with broad based knowledge of the various aspects of Physics with a bias towards electronics. The program is also designed to give students the required academic and practical background in all areas of Physics relevant to advancing the fields of electronics and Instrumentation Physics. The graduates of the program can be self-employed or easily employed in the electronics industry; communication, information and communication technology, banking industry, aviation, teaching, oil industry as well as research laboratories.


Admission Requirements
(a) UTME ADMISSION The entry requirements into the program shall be credit passes in five (5) subjects at WASSCE or NECO or GCE ordinary level, NABTEB or equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings. The five subjects must include English language, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to form the core subjects and one credit in one other relevant science subject. (b) DIRECT ENTRY In addition to the UME requirements specified in (a) above, candidates seeking admission by direct entry must possess either (i) National Diploma (ND) at Upper Credit or its equivalent such as in: Science Technology, Electronics and Electrical Engineering or (ii) two (2) A level passes (graded A-E) at Advanced Level (A/L) passes, with 5 points minimum, in Physics and Mathematics at one sitting or its equivalent.
