B.A English Programme


About B.A English

The degree programme is aimed at producing candidates who would have acquired sound intellectual capacity and communication skills in the English medium. The programme is planned to play a mutual enriching role with other degree programmes in the Humanities. It is expected to provide opportunities to acquire the English Language and Literature communication skills in order to build their career prospects in a variety of related services and professions.


Philosophy

Aim and Objective

The B.A. English programme objectives are: i. acquisition of knowledge of the forms and structures of the English Language: native speaker and other varieties, including the Nigerian varieties of English; ii. training in competent usage of the structures of English (oral and written) for effective communication in different domains; and iii. critical acquisition of content samples of different forms and genres of Literature-in-English in their cultural contexts: native-speaker varieties (English, American, etc.), Nigerian and other African-Caribbean varieties. iv. orientation of students towards self-employment by a focus on skills such as: creative writing, writing of articles in magazines, of speeches; designing and publishing magazines for the local and international media. v. acquisition of the skills of oral communication leading to the oral communication professions such as: designer and presenter of radio and TV programmes; producer of radio and TV jingles and advertisements; voice coach and speech trainer for staged play cast, film actors, actresses and compère; film subtitling (translator); and editors of films; and vi. preparing the students to pursue postgraduate studies in English Language, Linguistics, Literature, Theatre/Dramatic Arts, Communication Arts and to take up teaching and research at the appropriate levels of education.

Admission Requirements

UTME Candidates must satisfy the Faculty of Humanities and University admission requirements. Such requirements include:

Five credit passes at the Ordinary Level (SSCE, NECO, NABTEB, etc.), at a single sitting or six credits at not more than two sittings. The credits must include:

  • English Language,
  • Literature in English and
  • any other three in Arts or Social Sciences subjects.

For direct entry, In addition to 1 above, 2 ‘A’ level credit passes, or its equivalent in Literature in English, or Arts or Social Sciences subjects.
