The philosophy and mission of B.Sc. Political Science programme is to produce graduates with a critical mind, requisite ability and skill to comprehend, analyse, predict and influence the factors that shape and mould power relationships in an ever-changing socio-political environment in a globalizing world.


Philosophy

The philosophy and mission of B.Sc. Political Science programme is to produce graduates with the acritical mind, requisite ability and skill to comprehend, analyze, predict and influence the factors that shape and mould power relationships in anever-changing socio-political environment in a globalizing world.


Aim and Objective

The major aims and objectives of a degree in Political Science are to: 

  1. provide training in the principles of political science and their application to cognitive disciple – political economy, public administration or international relations; 
  2. stimulate the students intellectually to appreciate social problems and proffer solutions;
  3. provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge; 
  4. develop in students, such skills and competency that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial;
  5. provide the students with the skill-base from which they can proceed to postgraduate studies in political science and related disciplines;
  6. produce students who can carry out fieldwork, collect data and analyze these in a coherent manner, as well as engage in comparative analysis of one political system with others; and,
  7. imbue in the students a deep appreciation of the political dynamics of society and the impact of this on wider socio-economic development and societal well-being.

Admission Requirements

There are two levels of admission into Political Science Programme, i.e., UTME and Direct Entry.

  1. Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Programme (UTME)

Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Political Science should:

  1. Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate, General Certificate of Education, by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language, Government or History or any Social Science subject. There are no waivers for credit passes in any of these subjects. 
  2. In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME. The UTME subjects must be in the following: English, Mathematics, Government; Plus, any other Social Science subject.

 

 

  1. Admission Requirements for the Three-Year Programme (Direct Entry)

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits, in GCE, SSCE by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents; and JUPEB, IJMB, Ordinary National Diploma (O.N.D) or Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least lower credit in related disciplines from approved Nigerian Polytechnics. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any one of Government, History or Economics are required.
