About B.Sc Sociology

The philosophy underlying Sociology and its allied field is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills to make their contribution to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community. Having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the field of Social Sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of Sociology in particular.

The philosophy underlying Sociology and its alliedfield is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge andskills to make their contribution to the development of Nigeria, Africa and theglobal community. Having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in thefield of Social Sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of Sociologyin particular.

Aim and Objective

The major aims and objectives of a degree in Sociology are to: 

  1. Instill in students a sound knowledge of Sociology and its applications in different socio-cultural contexts;
  2. involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of society.
  3. Provide students with broad and well-balanced knowledge of sociological theories and methods. 
  4. Cultivate in students the ability to apply their sociological knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere. 
  5. Provide students with relevant knowledge and skill base from which they can proceed to further studies in special areas of Sociology or multi-disciplinary areas involving Sociology. 
  6.  Instill in students an appreciation of the importance of Sociology in socio-cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts. 
  7. Develop in students a range of useful competencies for public, private or self-employment. 

 

 

Admission Requirement
  1. Admission Requirements for the Four-Year Programme

Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Sociology should:

  1. Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate, General Certificate of Education, by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language, Economics, Geography or Government. There are no waivers for credit passes in any of these subjects. 
  2. In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME. The UTME subjects must be in the following: English, Mathematics, Economics; Plus, any other Social Science subject.

 

 

  1. Admission Requirements for the Three-Year Programme (Direct Entry)

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits, in GCE, SSCE by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents; and JUPEB, IJMB, Ordinary National Diploma (O.N.D) or Higher National Diploma (HND) at least with lower credit in related disciplines from approved Nigerian Polytechnics. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any one of Government, Geography or Economics are required.
